Daryl Dotson
Helping Students, Growing Community
Daryl Dotson is more than just a principal – he’s a beacon of inspiration and compassion in Newton’s educational landscape. With a rich background spanning wrestling coaching, teaching, and educational leadership, Dotson brings a unique blend of resilience, empathy, and genuine care to Berg Middle School. As a result, his approach to education goes beyond traditional administrative roles, emphasizing personal connection and individual growth.
A Foundation of Hard Work and Resilience
Raised by a hardworking single mother, Daryl Dotson learned the values of perseverance, respect, and determination early in life. Her example inspired his journey from aspiring auto shop owner to passionate educator and leader. Above all, his mother remains his greatest influence, who continues to lead by example. In fact, she earned her degree after he did and still chooses to work — shaping the core of Dotson’s personal and professional values.
The Coach’s Approach to Leadership
A former wrestling coach with 25 years of experience, Dotson understands the power of mentorship. Because of this, he believes in seeing the potential in every student, helping them discover their strengths, and supporting their growth. In particular, his leadership philosophy centers on being people-focused, listening actively, and creating a safe, supportive environment where students and staff can thrive. Through years of coaching, he’s learned that true leadership isn’t about commanding, but about empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Accordingly, Dotson’s approach involves giving students and staff a voice, actively seeking their input, and creating collaborative environments where everyone feels valued and heard.
Committed to Community
Since arriving in Newton, Dotson has quickly become an integral part of the community. Because he’s committed to visibility, he shows up at sporting events, community gatherings, and for his neighbors – always ready to lend an ear. Dotson emphatically believes in building relationships through consistent presence and genuine interaction. Whether it’s attending a local softball game, volunteering with community organizations, or simply taking walks to explore the city, he’s dedicated to understanding and becoming a true part of Newton’s fabric. And so, his vision for Berg Middle School follows that simple yet profound commitment: create a space where every student feels comfortable, safe, and valued.
A Leader Who Inspires
With an infectious enthusiasm and a genuine passion for education, Daryl Dotson is not just leading a school — he’s building a community of learners, supporters, and future leaders. His personal mission statement frames every challenge as a learning opportunity, therefore reflecting his growth mindset and commitment to continuous improvement. As a result, Dotson’s impact extends beyond the school walls, inspiring students, staff, and community members because of his authentic leadership and unwavering dedication to supporting young people’s potential.
